Ghost Hunt UK make a return to this wonderful, haunted building. Could you be brave and spend a night here? Will the Royal Gunpowder Mills ghosts make an appearance? Will it make our night go with a bang…?
In the mid-1850s onwards this site was involved in developing new explosives. We saw during world war one a Hugh demand and with this it increased its staff by 3000. The new staff recruited was mainly female. This then made a total of 6230 staff.
During WWII Waltham Abbey remained an important production unit .and the first two years of the war was the sole producer of RDX. This was the explosive that was used in the Bouncing Bomb.
In 1945 it re-opened as a research centre known as The Explosives Research and Development and was in existence to 1977.
Waltham Abbey was finally closed in 1991, ending 300 years of explosives production and research.
